Jake's vision still blurry, he could tell only that Noah was watching a video on his phone very intently with his headphones in. However, just before he closed his eyes again, he noticed the light from a bright screen across the aisle. Groggy, he hardly moved as his eyes opened, processing that all was still fine and he could go back to sleep. In a few minutes, he was out cold.Ībout an hour later, Jake was suddenly awoken when the bus hit a pothole in the road. He normally wouldn't have slept on a ride like this, but the day had been a long one and the darkness around him took its toll. Although his teammate Noah was across the aisle, there was no one in the seat next to him so Jake pulled his gym bag onto the empty seat and leaned over, resting his head on it like a pillow and shutting his eyes. Jake had assumed his usual seat in the back left row of the bus. Now fully dark outside, the bus was nearly silent apart from the sounds of the road. Despite the excitement of winning the game, the sunset brought on a certain tiredness in all the players. The college soccer team had just won an away game against one of their most important rivals and was now on a long bus ride home through rural Iowa to get back to campus. This is a short story that can be enjoyed without having read the rest of the series.
